Over thirty years of experience is certainly helpful, but the real question is, “What have you done lately?” Here’s a sampling from the last three years

  • Prepared a PowerPoint briefing for newcomers to the P-16 concept
  • Outlined a comprehensive approach to launching a statewide P-16 initiative for Colorado's Donnell-Kay Foundation
  • Authored white papers on "Improving Achievement and Reducing the Gaps" and "Transitions To and From High School" for the Colorado Commission for High School Improvement.
  • Examined Ohio's readiness for initiating a statewide P-16 approach to education policy, proposed a framework for Ohio leaders to use and recommended formation of a P-16 Council.
  • Created a P-16 team for a national nonprofit that provided policy services to state government leaders, authored a P-16 primer that shaped government and foundation leaders’ perspectives on P-16 education and created a P-16 policy web site that is acclaimed as the most comprehensive source of P-16 information.
  • Ran a grant competition that encouraged states to pilot P-16 ideas. Two states – Illinois and Louisiana – implemented new policy approaches as a result of their grant activities.
  • Developed a guide to the policy process (168 KB PDF) for folks unfamiliar with policy development and decision making that offers a map for dealing effectively with policy leaders.
  • Prepared a series of state education policy summaries (116 KB PDF) for a national business organization that has become very popular with busy executives interested in influencing education policy.
  • Worked as part of a national team creating a web-based policy resource on using community colleges to train teachers and paraprofessionals that fills an information gap in this new policy area.
